Levels…

God is majestic and beautiful and powerful. He is everything when there is nothing and He is everything when there is everything. He is the reason things are working in our favour, the reason we breathe, the very reason for our being. The beauty of God is no matter what we do, He always is. Whether I choose to denounce God, God forbid, He will still be God. There’s a Praise song that I love so much. It says: “I will lift up my voice, I will joyfully sing. Not for what you have done for me, but for who you are. You are the song that I sing, melody in my heart. And the reason I live, is to praise you Lord.” That says, I will praise God for who He is, not for all the deeds He has done for me. Yes, I acknowledge that He has done a lot for me, but His Character is greater than His deeds. God is unquantifiable. God is quite literally, love. Everything about Him is love. That is why, getting to heaven is a by-product of your love of God. Once you love God truly, purely, everything else becomes doable. You don’t see it as a punishment. I’ve come to realize, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, that there are levels to being born-again. The first level is when you have just accepted Christ as your Lord and Saviour, you’re just full of joy of having let go of your past burdens. Everything is new and exciting. Remember: The Holy Spirit fills you at New Birth, so you feel you can do anything. If you let Him, he can take you to the next level. If you don’t let Him however, you remain at the first level. The first level (being born again) is only the beginning of our walk with Christ. But many get stuck on that level and think they have arrived at their destination. You may love God and you may be serving Him, but you can’t serve Him fully because you just don’t understand service at the first level. You can even be going to church every Sunday at this stage, but it means nothing. You need the second stage, because that is when you start reading the Bible, learning more about your New Life.

2 Corinthians 5:17 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Now that you are new, you need help living this new life because we can’t achieve anything in the flesh.

John 6:63 63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

So, we need the Holy Spirit to keep bolstering us in this new life, otherwise we just keep doing carnal things, not knowing that God is against them.

2 Corinthian 3:17-18 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Little by little, the Holy Spirit transforms us into the same image of God. The second stage now being that we become hungry for the Word, hungry to spend all the time with God. So, the second leads to the third, where this hunger becomes a hunger to serve God in all our capacity. Being a Christian is all consuming, in the best way possible.

Deuteronomy 10:12 12 And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

That is the way God would prefer it, because in Heaven, our occupation will be praising Him, so isn’t it better we get started here? The whole point of this post, is to talk about love of God and for God. If we don’t truly, honestly, all-consumingly love God, we can’t be classified as Christians. Then we are just pretending. When reading the books of some Christian leaders that I admire, what I get is a true sense of the Love of God. People out there, not all people, they want to experience the fullness of God without loving God completely. They want the prosperity that God offers, the total health and vitality, the wisdom, the strength etc., but they can’t go through what it takes to get them, meaning true love. If we read 1 Corinthians 13, we get a sense of that kind of love. It is the kind of love that is totally reliant on God and not self or others. Bishop David Oyedepo has said on countless occasions, “If God cannot take me there, may I never go there. If God cannot give it to me, may I never have it!” That is when it has become God or nothing. Like the three Hebrew boys, who said in the face of destruction by fire, “Even if God will not rescue us, we won’t bow!” King Nebuchadnezzar was astounded and insulted and had the fire upped several degrees, but the boys were saved by Jesus. God saw the true, unflinching love and was so moved, He sent His son to protect them. (Daniel 3:1- 30) Loving God becomes easy once we have the Holy Spirit, because of the providence of the fruits of the spirit.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

That is why I said, it is in levels. Once you open yourself up to God, He takes you through the levels, by the Spirit. There’s never a point in your Christian journey that you will say, “Wow, I’ve  finally reached the destination.” No. Even after years of being born again, God can tell you something that will have you so excited as if you just gave your life to Christ yesterday. That’s because God is new every day, and His mercies are new every morning. (Lamentations 3:22).

Thank God for the level you are at now, spiritually. You can’t see the next without being grateful for the present. Though it seems you aren’t where you want to be, by God’s grace and your effort, you will surely get there. Don’t be lazy, don’t get discouraged. Keep pressing.

Love, Lerato K.
